Snuffle Mats & Kongs Aren’t Calming Your High-Energy Dog?

by 13 Nov, 2024

If you’re the proud owner of a high-energy dog, you’ve probably found yourself trying everything to get them to “settle down” — and so much of the time we’re told that lick mats and puzzle toys will get them there.

But here’s the thing: when it comes to dogs with big feelings and even bigger energy, focusing exclusively on “calming” activities might actually be doing them a disservice.

High-energy dogs do need to learn how to be calm at times; this doesn’t always come naturally to them! However, one of the most important things to keep in mind when fostering a well-behaved, balanced dog, is making sure you’re meeting their deeper needs. For many high-energy dogs, that means providing plenty of high intensity activities that engage their brains just as much as their bodies.

Why Mental Stimulation Matters for High-Energy Dogs

While many high-energy dogs might appear to be constantly “on the go,” it’s important to remember that they weren’t necessarily bred to run endlessly without a purpose. Take many working breeds, for example: they were often bred to think on their feet and make quick, calculated decisions under pressure. So while physical exercise is important, the true magic happens when you combine movement with mental challenge. And I’m not talking about repetitive “fetch” type activities here! The best activities incorporate exercises that require problem-solving, decision-making, and quick thinking.

Balancing High-Intensity Activities with Decompression

Of course, the key is finding a balance. High-energy dogs thrive on intense activities, but they also need time to decompress and unwind. The challenge lies in figuring out what that balance looks like for your individual dog.

However, if you’ve been attempting to rely on puzzle toys and snuffle mats, and still find that your dog isn’t calming down, it might be time to rethink their exercise routine. Sometimes, high-energy dogs need more physical exertion in combination with mental stimulation to help them decompress effectively.

What If You’re Not Sure Where to Start?

Every dog is an individual, and there is no one-size-fits-all solution. If you’re finding that your dog isn’t achieving calm despite your best efforts, it might be time to adjust their activity regime!
