Reactive Dog Myths!
As a dog trainer who specialises in working with reactive dogs, I often hear misconceptions about reactive behaviour that can leave pet owners feeling frustrated, confused, or even hopeless. Reactive behaviours can look like barking, lunging, or growling at other dogs, people, or even inanimate objects. But these reactions are often misunderstood.
In today’s blog, I’m diving into some of the most common myths I hear about reactive dogs and sharing the truth behind them. If you’re a dog owner dealing with a reactive dog, understanding these myths can help reduce frustration and provide insight into how to better support your dog’s emotional well-being.
Myth 1: “They’re Misbehaving”
One of the most common misconceptions I hear is the belief that reactive dogs are simply “misbehaving” or not listening to their owners. If your dog is barking or lunging, it can feel like they’re being stubborn or defiant. But this is rarely the case.
The Truth: Reactivity often stems from stress, fear, anxiety, or overwhelm, not misbehaviour. In fact, reactive dogs may be so emotionally overloaded in those moments that they’re physically incapable of listening to you or following cues. It’s not about ignoring you; it’s about being in a state of distress. Recognising this is the first step toward building empathy and finding effective solutions for your dog’s reactivity.
Myth 2: “He’s Being Protective”
Another common belief is that reactive behaviour—particularly barking or lunging—is a sign that a dog is trying to protect their owner. While it’s easy to interpret this behaviour as “protectiveness,” the reality is a bit more complex.
The Truth: In most cases, reactive behaviour is rooted in fear, anxiety, or frustration—not a desire to protect. Dogs may bark or lunge when they feel threatened or unsure about the situation, not because they are trying to protect you. Understanding the underlying emotional state behind the reaction is crucial for addressing the behaviour in a healthy and positive way.
Myth 3: “They Just Need More Exposure”
Exposure is often suggested as a solution for reactive dogs—just get them out there, around more people or dogs, and they’ll “get used to it.” While gradual exposure can be a part of the solution, it’s important to remember that how and when exposure happens is critical.
The Truth: It’s not just about more exposure; it’s about controlled and positive exposure. Without a structured plan, simply throwing your dog into situations where they might feel overwhelmed or scared can increase their reactivity. Effective training involves careful management and desensitisation, where we build up your dog’s tolerance in a safe, controlled manner. This ensures that your dog learns to cope with triggers in a healthy way.
The Reality of Reactivity: It’s Tough, But Manageable
Dealing with a reactive dog can be incredibly challenging, but it doesn’t mean you’re stuck with the behaviour forever. The good news is that reactivity is manageable, and you don’t have to face it alone. Working with a qualified, ethical professional can help you develop a plan tailored to both you and your dog.
